Why Outdoor Exercise Is Important

Researchers in the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry has undertaken a review of many studies, which compared the effects of exercise initiatives.  Reported from the Science Daily, the apparent conclusion of the study is that there are psychological and physical benefits to our well-being, which can be gained by doing healthy exercise from the natural environment.

About our psychological well-being, most of the studies reviewed found that exercising in the natural environment, when compared with exercising inside, was associated with greater feelings of revitalization, higher energy, and positive involvement, in addition to decreases in anxiety, confusion, anger, and depression.  Interestingly, research participants also reported greater pleasure and satisfaction with outside exercise compared with exercise activities, and they stated they were likely to repeat outdoor exercise activity later on.

Regrettably, none of the studies forming part of this healthy exercise review measured the effects of outside physical activity on physical well-being in contrast to indoor exercise, or the effect of natural environments on adhering to an exercise regime.  Because of this, it is believed that the benefits to our physical well-being that the researchers assert, more likely are connected with the mind-body relationship.  As we state: a healthy mind, a healthy body.  Additional study is required to understand the connection between mental and physical well-being and outside exercise.

However, for men and women who live most of their lives indoors four walls or in urban environments, the results speak for themselves.  Exercising outdoors appears beneficial to your emotional health, especially if you suffer from a mental illness.  A caveat to that, however, has to be that if you exercise in an extremely polluted outdoor environment, while you exercise, where you will be inhaling toxic fumes, your physical well-being might be adversely affected.  Possibly overlooked and important at the review of healthy exercise is that the fact that whenever you are participating in daytime outdoor fitness, you are receiving vitamin D through sun exposure, which contributes to physical and mental well-being.

Another element which might be interesting to explore and which isn’t mentioned is the effect of outdoor exercise between other people.  Engaging in social interaction is known also to improve our mental state and to have effects.  Studying the influence of job outdoor exercise on your own, compared to playing and exercising as part of a group for outdoor fitness on this well-being might be instructive.  The deeper insight could be gained to doing indoor exercise if the attention of any study comprised a comparison between the influence on the well-being of doing exercise inside by yourself.  It well maybe that different strokes for different people are revealed, with the level of well-being experienced determined by personality.  On their own, any fitness activity may be preferred by introverted individuals for example.

Whether you exercise inside or out, routine healthy exercise is very good for our physical fitness and well-being.  Now it is confirmed that mental well-being is significantly boosted by outdoor exercise.  Perhaps this will spur local authorities into action to provide their communities with appropriate resources and programs which benefit their components, including open green spaces, fitness machines at the park, and fresh air.
